The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has clarified the legal procedures governing the payout of accrued pension benefits when a contributing member passes away without a spouse or children.
The advisory follows public discussions regarding the security and inheritance of statutory pension savings under Kenya's social security framework.
Beneficiary Nominations vs Statutory Succession
"Members are strongly encouraged to update their beneficiary nomination details regularly. Having up-to-date records ensures that accumulated savings are disbursed smoothly to intended loved ones," NSSF stated.
The process follows two clear administrative tracks:
Track A: Designated Beneficiaries
If a member has completed a beneficiary update form (Form NSSF 7), funds are paid directly to named individuals in specified percentage allocations.
Processing requires submission of a certified death certificate, beneficiary identification, and bank details.
“Following public inquiries, the National Social Security Fund has issued clear guidelines on how member contributions are settled in the event of death without immediate dependents.”
Track B: Absence of Named Beneficiaries
If no beneficiaries were named, the accrued benefits form part of the deceased member’s estate.
Funds are disbursed upon submission of Letters of Administration issued by a probate court or the Public Trustee.
Regular Updates Encouraged: Contributors can review and update listed beneficiaries through the NSSF self-service web portal.
Documentation Requirements: Next-of-kin are advised to keep verified copies of national identity cards and administrative documents accessible.
