Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has formally advocated for the relocation of the Moi Air Base in Eastleigh, arguing that the military facility’s presence within a dense civilian hub constrains city development and creates unnecessary safety risks.
Speaking during an urban infrastructure forum in the capital, Sakaja emphasized that moving the airbase to a less populated location would release high-value land for urban renewal, transport interchanges, and housing.
Re-Zoning Commercial Hubs
"Eastleigh has grown into one of East Africa’s most vibrant commercial centers. Operating an active military runway surrounded by high-density residential towers creates clear operational and safety challenges," Sakaja stated.
Key factors supporting the relocation proposal include:
Building Height Limits: Flight-path safety regulations currently cap building elevations across Eastleigh, Pumwani, California, and Pangani.
“Nairobi County leadership has urged the national government to move the Moi Air Base out of Eastleigh to release commercial land and eliminate building height caps.”
Public Safety: Mitigating risks associated with low-altitude military aircraft flying over heavily populated neighborhoods.
Commercial Expansion: Vacated acreage could accommodate modern market facilities, bus terminals, and public parks.
Jurisdictional Approvals: Relocating a national defense facility requires formal review and approvals from the Ministry of Defence and the National Security Council.
Real Estate Reaction: Property developers have welcomed the discussion, predicting significant capital investment if zoning height restrictions are eased.
