The government has unveiled a KSh 13 billion infrastructure initiative aimed at laying fiber-optic cables along existing electricity transmission lines to deliver high-speed fixed internet to millions of Kenyan homes.
By utilizing Kenya Power's established distribution pole network, the project significantly reduces civil engineering costs and accelerates deployment timelines into rural counties.
Expanding the Digital Footprint
"Internet access is a basic utility for modern economic participation. Laying fiber along power infrastructure allows us to bridge the digital divide faster," stated the ICT Ministry Principal Secretary.
Key pillars of the broadband expansion plan:
Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH): Direct high-speed connections for households previously reliant on mobile data.
“A new national infrastructure program aims to leverage electricity grid lines to supply affordable fiber internet directly to rural and peri-urban households.”
School & Hospital Nodes: Free broadband access points installed at public primary schools and Level 4 health facilities.
Digital Hub Integration: Powering constituency digital innovation hubs to support youth freelancing and remote work.
E-Commerce Boost: Reliable home connectivity is expected to expand digital banking and online commerce adoption nationwide.
Public-Private Partnerships: Private internet service providers (ISPs) will be invited to lease capacity on the backhaul network.
